Battles we face, Sufferings and Pain

How to overcome disappointments in life as a Christian

Have you being able to overcome disappointments that crashed into your life on your own?

We were going through our dark valleys and “they” didn’t show up.

We cried for help, but “they” said they cannot drop their current lives and come for us.

“They” abandoned us and left us all alone.

“They” were family. Disappointment and grief began to cloud over our lives.

What is disappointment?

The dictionary explains it as a feeling of sadness or displeasure caused by the non-fulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations.

“The they” in our lives could be our parents, spouse, best friends, extended family members, siblings, co-worker, or even Church family.

“Never mind who frowns, if God smiles” Catherine Booth.

But GOD comes through in the appointed time. God weeps and grieves along with His children who are rejected by our people.

One of the strategies that the Devil uses to break the spirit of a child of God is DISAPPOINTMENT. Satan wants us to believe that God has abandoned us too. He wants us to mistrust everyone including the ones who genuinely care so that we feel alienated.

Here are 7 Biblical way to handle and overcome disappointment in life

How to handle disappointments in life

1.Just because “they” don’t want you, doesn’t mean Jesus has forsaken you.

It is so important to realize our worth in Jesus Christ. Often, we dissect our broken situations and over analyze. “I am worthless” “maybe I was meant to live a disappointed life”

We can overcome disappointment by remembering that God will not disappoint us.

We give up on what the Lord promised and hang on to man’s unfaithful words. It is okay to grieve over the loss we experienced but it not okay to quit.

Matthew 28:20, NLT And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

2. Disappointments can be a turning point of when God uses you to be part of HIS story.

Accept that disappointments will most certainly happen on this side of the world. Those we trusted the most can disappoint us. The Lord knew I would be wallowing in my pain during my season of disappointment and called me to start a blogging ministry.

This ministry saved my life as I was raising my triplets and struggling. Glory to God because now it is HIS story.

Genesis 50: 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

We are familiar with the story of young Joseph being sold by his very own brothers. Can our family disappoint? Yes, very much so. The journey towards the greatest appointment that God had for Joseph didn’t come right away.

God was with Joseph in the pit, at Potiphar’s house, the prison, and then the palace; the story didn’t end there. We know God wrote HIS story by using Joseph to save his own family.

Did someone intend to harm you? Have faith God intended your story to be used for His glory.

3. Recognize your disappointment and make an appointment with Jesus

It is so important that we don’t let our hurts become open wounds. Recognize that you were disappointed and run to the Great Physician. You and I, we cannot survive alone without Christ.

I learned a very important when I put my trust in the people around me instead of trusting the Lord. The Bible warns us that it is better to trust in the Lord than put our confidence in man.

Jeremiah 8: 22 ,Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has not the health of the daughter of my people been restore

Martha was disappointed that her sister was not helping her in the kitchen. Did Martha go around the town badmouthing Mary? She approached Jesus!

4. Pour your complaints to the Lord

No man or woman can ease our pain like Jesus. Why?

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet he did not sin.

Christ suffered at the hands of his very own Creation, and He knows how much disappointment hurts.

Jesus can turn our griefs to redeeming grace, our disappointments into divine appointments, and our sadness into songs of dancing.

Psalm 42:11, NLT  Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!

5. Reflect on how God came through for you amid your disappointments

God wants us to trust in His abundant goodness and mercy even in the middle of our deepest disappointments.

“When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.” Johnson Oatman Jr.

You can overcome disappointment by counting the blessings we have in our lives and remember that the disappointments we face are temporary. This will help us to cultivate a grateful heart instead of a grievous one.

6. Release your disappointments into the hands of a just Savior.

It may take time to forget the disappointments but releasing those burdens into the hands of the One who cares for you is a better choice. God is a just Father, so LET GO and LET GOD!

Luke 18:7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

For the Lord is going to write His story and call you into His ministry. My friend, don’t hide behind the curtains of your disappointments

7. Remember God will raise a new tribe for you

I was allowed to go through painful season in my life where I had no one to even share my struggles or simple joys. Today, the Lord gave me manifold blessings through the blogging ministry – one being the gift of friendships. I can reach out to my girlfriends in the Lord and receive the gift of encouragement, prayer, and love.

Hebrews 10:19-25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

The same Lord who prepared a position for Joseph through the King of Egypt is preparing an increase for you and your household. HE is the KING of kings and can move any mountains. Amen

Why is it important to look up and not around when we are hurt by people or circumstances? Just as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus while walking on water we should keep our eyes on Jesus when we are hurt or disappointed by people or circumstances . Just as Peter began to sink beneath the waves when he took his eyes off Jesus, we can sink into waves of discouragement when we focus on our hurts and disappointments. Thank you so much for your blog! I recently experienced hurtful situations that shook me deeply. I realized that I had let the busyness of life steal me away from my daily study of God’s word. Thank you for taking the time to share in your blog!! It’s so important to keep our focus on Jesus and be in God’s word every day!!!

This is so good. I needed to read this today. In the midst of our disappointments, it is so important to be honest with God and then not dwell there, but move forward with Him every step of the way. Blessings!

Excellent post! Learning how to overcome disappointment is important because, let’s face it, we will experience a lot of it. I have always been the type to stomp my feet and pout when things don’t work out the way I’d like 🙁 and that gets me nowhere. The verses you chose are spot on!
