Why Jesus Christ is the God of our painful Gethsemane
“May I be willing, Lord, to bear
Daily my cross for Thee ;
Even Thy cup of grief to share,
Thou hast borne all for me.
Lest I forget Gethsemane, Lead me to Calvary”
This wonderful hymn penned down by Jennie E. Hussey has been my childhood favorite song. I am someone who tends to forget the Gethsemane that my Christ endured because I get caught up in my own heartaches.
Gethsemane literally means “the garden of oil press”, it was a place that was located on the Mount of Olives. Jesus often visited this place to PRAY with His disciples.
In olden times, the olive trees were beaten to have the olives fall to the ground. Then they were crushed in a stone basin until all the liquids came out and it became a red paste.
Our Christ was beaten and crushed by His own creation. The weight of our sins wore Him down, and He was crushed for our transgressions.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. Isaiah 53:5, NASB
At the place called Gethsemane, Jesus wept and prayed ‘ O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from ME; Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Mathew 26:39.
Let us remember that there was no conflict between the Persons of the Godhead, it is a revelation of Christ in His humanity.
My hands tremble as I write these words because I know I was the reason He was crushed and broken. Jesus foresaw how he was going to be crushed like the olives for the sake of his beloved creation.
When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. John 18:1,2 NIV
Even his disciple, Judas knew the exact place where Jesus would be found.
—-Do we have a place of prayer where even the Devil fears to come nigh?
—-Have we strengthened and covered ourselves in prayer at the time of our trials and deep sorrows?
Four lessons from Gethsemane:
1.It was the place of deep anguish, and great agony for our Lord Jesus.
2. A place where His Jesus knew His Father would turn His face way, and His disciples would be sleeping.
3. It was the beginning of His walk towards the betrayal by one of his disciples and His journey towards the cruel Cross.
4. Our painful Gethsemane are never forgotten because of His agony at Gethsemane
Our painful gethsemanes:
We have our painful gethsemanes in this world, the times when we feel crushed in our spirits by our very own, by the trials and wounds that never seem to go away.
Our gethsemanes are where we find zero strength to even pray because our heart is groaning deep, but Praise God, He prays for us.
It could be the temptation or an illness we go through as an individual, the brutal behavior of a family member, the betrayal of a friend, the emptiness and loneliness we experience in this world.
The lack of empathy from those we thought were our near ones is so painful.
Let me remind you, dear friend, Jesus who walked before you in HIS GETHSAMANE knows all about your gethsemanes.
**I spelled our gethsemanes with a small letter ‘g’ because I cannot dare compare them to the pain Jesus suffered for my sake.
Jesus tried to wake his disciples three times to be sharers of His awful and painful journey, but they were fast asleep.
And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. Luke 22:44, NASB
Luke, the physician recorded this exact detail in the gospel to show us the nature of the assault and agony our Christ underwent for us.
Can you picture Christ wiping your tears in your season today?
He is right there with you and I today.
Gethsemane should never be forgotten
Gethsemane should never be forgotten because it gives us a picture of God’s work and not man’s work to save us. No man had laid hands on the Lord at Gethsemane to physically wound Him and cause such anguish.
It was the mental agony that Jesus endured in that garden that caused Him to sweat drops of blood.
It wasn’t the fear of dying but the burden of sins Jesus voluntarily carried upon Himself that caused such deep agony.
The garden of Eden separated man from having an intimate fellowship with God, and at the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus became the ANSWER to rectify that barrier. Awake, o child of God from thy slumber.

Lest we forget Gethsemane, we forget the agony Jesus experienced. We forget Jesus and HIS agape love !!!
Prayer of a child of God :
O Lamb of God , I see you in the garden of Gethsemane urging your sleepy disciples to watch and pray. You wanted them to be awake and strengthen you.
O Lamb of God, I see your heart in deep distress because of the bitter cup You were about to receive upon Yourself. You prayed that this divine wrath be taken away if it was the Father’s will.
Christ , My Messiah, I see you in Gethsemane in deep agony as you were praying and Thy sweats were like drops of blood.
O Lamb of God, I see the betrayer walking towards you so that he would feign a kiss upon you. I see myself as that betrayer who was the cause of thy very anguish.
O ,Lamb of God- May I never forget Gethsemane!
May I be never ashamed of sharing Thy Name in this world.
Help me to watch and pray , lest the Enemy strike against me today.
Amen!
— Do we remember the sufferings of our Lord Jesus only during the time of Easter or every single day?
May we never forget our Lord who never forgot us in the garden of agony – Gethsemane.

March 27, 2018 at 8:00 amDear Diana, what a powerful reminder of the day of when the weight of our sin and the rejection of all would begin to fall on our Savior. I had never thought about Jesus entering Gethsemane, knowing He would be denied by His Father. Thank you for sharing that insight! Blessings for an abundant Resurrection Day:)

March 27, 2018 at 11:13 pmGethsemane has such deep meaning, and it became personal for anyone on the face of this earth who has experienced horrible pain. A God who experienced gethsemane can relate with our hurts. This is not an affiliate link.

March 28, 2018 at 9:14 amIt’s so easy to sometimes feel distant, in our struggles, from the one who can relate to them and has walked his own road. You narrowed this gap with such a wonderful and powerful writeup on this subject. Thank you! Blessings to you!

March 28, 2018 at 9:37 amBeautiful post, Diana. Fresh insight. I never thought about our own painful Gethsemane experiences. We seem to focus on carrying a cross, but the garden scene is part of the overall journey for the Christ-follower too. So thankful Jesus knows and walks with us, and sympathizes in our same experience even though it will never match the agony like His own suffering. And may we remember them all year long and not only at Easter. Amen and Amen!

March 28, 2018 at 1:35 pmAmen ! Jesus has walked the road of suffering much before we did and hence He is a God with whom we can relate much. What a loving Savior we serve

March 29, 2018 at 8:53 amLike the disciples, I’m tempted to look away, to fall asleep on His suffering, and yet this time of year slows me down and invites me into the deep pondering of all that He sacrificed out of obedience to His Father and in order to absorb the wrath of God on my behalf. Unbelievable grace!

March 30, 2018 at 5:53 pmDiana, Thank you for your beautiful post. I am so glad I sat down to read for a few minutes and came across your post. The garden of Gethsemane has been on my heart this week. Yes, I think about Jesus’s suffering throughout the year, not just this season. When I have to do something challenging I squeeze a cross I carry and say, “Well if Jesus could endure all that he did, certainly I can do this.”
Thank you for sharing with Grace & Truth Link-Up.

April 3, 2018 at 11:11 pmDiana,
What a powerful reminder. May we never forget. When I think of my darkest days – the days of the deepest betrayal and darkest fears – I remember and recognize just a bit deeper the emotions Jesus experienced in the garden of gethsemane. Yet I know, even my darkest was nothing compared to what He knew was coming … And all for us.
Thank you for the reminder of love and of sacrifice in the name of that love.
Blessings,
Lori
